Mole removal procedures vary a great deal depending on the type, size, and even location of the mole. There are two primary procedures that your dermatologist might use. The first is a shave excision, in which the mole is shaved flat or flush with the skin and no sutures are required.
Surgical Excision
The other mole removal option is surgical excision, which goes deeper than a shave excision. In this procedure your dermatologist uses a scalpel or device called a trephine (imagine a small medical cookie cutter) to completely remove the mole all the way down to the fat. After the removal of the mole, the wound is sutured closed and you may need to return to the office in 7-14 days for suture removal. In either procedure, your dermatologist is likely to send the mole to a lab for microscopic examination as a precaution. This microscopic evaluation is done by a dermatopathologist and is charged through your insurance directly by this provider. If you do not want the biopsy to be performed, you can elect to defer this examination.
