What Are Shave Biopsy Treatments?

A shave biopsy is a quick and easy way to get a diagnosis on a concerning skin lesion without requiring stitches. The skin is anesthetized with local anesthesia and a portion of the lesion is scraped off with a blade and sent to the pathologist for diagnosis.

A medication called aluminum chloride is applied to stop the bleeding, or if necessary electrocautery is used for this purpose. The depth of the shave biopsy and healing time depends upon what your dermatologist is trying to “rule out” and body location being biopsied.
