Botulinum (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Daxxify):
Botulinum toxin is the active ingredient in Botox and similar injectables that are collectively referred to as “neuromodulators.” Neuromodulators like Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and Daxxify are designed to relax wrinkles and provide a more youthful appearance. Though botulinum can be used for other purposes, such as reducing excessive sweating by inhibiting sweat glands, it is far more commonly used for cosmetic purposes and is considered safe for cosmetic use. It works by blocking the interaction of the nerves and desired muscles at the neuromuscular junction. This essentially reduces or inhibits function of the muscles that contribute to dynamic facial lines and wrinkles. Contrary to popular belief, botulinum does not “freeze” your face and render you unable to express emotions. Neuromodulators can be used to soften existing facial lines caused by expressive muscle contractions in the face; additionally, when started early enough, it can even PREVENT wrinkles and lines in aging skin. Botox
Botox is the most popular option for treating fine lines and wrinkles, primarily because it’s been approved by the FDA the longest (since 1989).
Botox is formulated with isolated ingredients and spreads less. This makes Botox more suitable for treating areas that need heavier concentrations of product.
Aside from fine lines and wrinkles, Botox is used to treat lazy eye, migraines, neck spasms, excessive sweating, and an overactive bladder.
Botox’s onset of action typically begins two to four days after injection and peaks at about two weeks.
Dysport
Dysport is more dilute compared to Botox and Xeomin. Some providers believe that this formula spreads more easily from the injection site, which makes it a good option for treating broader, larger muscles on the face.
Dysport is an excellent treatment for reducing the appearance of horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet. It is also FDA approved for treatment of frown lines between the eyes.
It generally takes two to three days before results can be seen after the treatment.
Xeomin
Xeomin is a good option for treating fine age lines like glabellar lines, horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet.
What sets Xeomin apart from Botox and Dysport is the absence of complex proteins. Botox and Dysport both include proteins in their formula, whereas Xeomin does not.
Results from Xeomin injections should be visible after three to four days.
Daxxify
Daxxify is the newest FDA-approved neuromodulator. Its claim to fame is FDA approval for efficacy up to six months, whereas most neuromodulators last three to four months on average.
The difference in duration of action may be attributable to its patented 35 amino acids. These produce a positive charge on the botulinum toxin, allowing it to bind more readily at the negatively charged neuromuscular junction. Remember the old saying, “opposites attract!”?
At Premier Dermatology, we are proud to be one of the early, select practices to have access to this wonderful new product.
Which Neuromodulator Product Is Right for Me?
Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Daxxify all contain botulinum toxin but are formulated differently. At Premier Dermatology, we will help you decide on the right injectable treatment for your fine age lines.
After Your Treatment Session
There are very few side effects, but they may include redness and swelling at the injection site as well as some brief discomfort, but otherwise, there is no downtime. In fact, it is safe to apply makeup and return to everyday activity immediately following your session. Botulinum toxin treatments are not permanent; the results tend to last anywhere from three to six months depending on the individual. The results are not immediate, either. Most people return for a second appointment in a week to determine whether additional botulinum injections will be required to achieve the desired results. To schedule your appointment for botulinum, contact Premier Dermatology today.
